What Are Flat Bottom Bags?

Flat bottom bags, also known as box pouches, combine a flat rectangular base with expandable side gussets. They create a structured, upright pack that gives brands strong shelf visibility and accommodates products ranging from specialty coffee to family-size dry foods.

Why Choose Flat Bottom Bags?

  • Stand out on the shelf: The flat base supports stable upright display when appropriately filled, keeping your branding visible and your product range neatly presented.
  • Make more room for your brand: Five exterior panels (front, back, two sides and base) provide space for graphics, product information and brand storytelling.
  • Balance capacity and presentation: The box-like shape accommodates larger fills while maintaining a defined footprint, helping organize retail shelves and shipping cartons.
  • Protect product quality: Laminated materials can be selected for moisture, oxygen and light barrier requirements. Optional degassing valves suit roasted coffee; protection depends on the complete material and sealing specification.
  • Improve everyday convenience: Optional resealable zippers make multi-serving products easier to access and store after opening.
  • Weigh cost against retail value: Flat bottom bags typically cost more to manufacture than simpler pouch formats. Their structured presentation and reclosure options can justify the investment for premium or multi-use products, while their lightweight construction offers an alternative to rigid containers.

Customized for Your Product

Sorbar customizes bag dimensions, material structures, printing and functional features. Share your product type, fill weight, shelf-display needs and filling method to help define a practical flat bottom bag specification.

How to Choose the Right Flat Bottom Bag Size

The right size must hold your product and also leave room for sealing, display and everyday use. Products of the same weight can need very different pouch sizes, so we recommend confirming the size based on the following:

  • Product type and fill quantity: Share the product name and the net weight or volume per pack. Powders, granules, liquids and irregular pieces each need a different amount of space.
  • Filling and sealing method: Manual or automatic filling needs enough seal allowance, and fittings such as zippers or spouts also reduce usable capacity.
  • Sales and display: Consider shelf height, standing stability, carton packing and shipping.
  • Consumer use: Single-use or repeated use determines the opening size and whether a reclosable feature is needed.

Common Flat Bottom Bag Reference Sizes

The fill quantities below are for initial selection only. A listed size will not hold every product of the same weight; the final size should be confirmed with a physical fill test.

Reference Fill WeightWidth × HeightBottom Gusset
250 g140 × 210 mm70 mm
340 g140 × 230 mm70 mm
500 g150 × 255 mm80 mm
1000 g195 × 295 mm95 mm

Reference sizes only. Custom sizes are available. Your dimension drawing should state how the gusset is measured (unfolded width or single-side fold depth) to avoid misunderstanding.

Not Sure Which Size to Choose?

Send Sorbar your product details, target fill quantity and filling method. We can recommend reference sizes and arrange samples for test filling, so you can check actual capacity, seal allowance and standing performance before confirming the production size.

If you have shelf-life requirements, please tell us as well, so we can evaluate the material structure and barrier needs. Shelf life cannot be guaranteed by pack size alone.

FAQ

Flat Bottom Bags FAQ

What is the minimum order quantity for custom flat bottom bags?
With digital printing, the MOQ is 1,000 pouches per design. With gravure printing, the MOQ is 10,000 pouches per design. Digital printing suits trial launches and multiple SKUs; gravure is more economical for large, repeat orders.
How long does production take?
Standard lead time is 10-12 working days for digital printing and 15-18 working days for gravure printing. Larger orders may require more time; the schedule confirmed with your order applies.
Can you help me choose the right size?
Yes. Tell us your product, target fill quantity and filling method. We will suggest reference sizes and can arrange samples for test filling before production.
Do you provide a free design template?
Yes. Tell us the pack type, size, quantity per design and number of designs, and we will send a free design template marking the bleed, safe area and seal positions, along with a recommended printing method.
What is the difference between a flat bottom bag and a stand-up pouch?
A flat bottom bag (box pouch) combines a flat rectangular base with expandable side gussets, giving a structured, box-like shape and five printable panels. A stand-up pouch stands on an expandable bottom gusset and has two main printable panels. Flat bottom bags usually cost more to make but offer a more premium shelf presence.
Can flat bottom bags have a zipper and a degassing valve?
Yes. Optional resealable zippers make multi-serving products easier to store after opening, and one-way degassing valves suit roasted coffee. Protection depends on the complete material and sealing specification.
