What Are Side Gusset Bags?

Side gusset bags feature folded side panels that expand as the bag is filled, creating room for larger product volumes while remaining compact when empty. Commonly used for coffee, tea, dry foods and pet products, this format combines generous capacity with a familiar retail appearance.

Why Choose Side Gusset Bags?

  • Package more product efficiently: Expandable sides accommodate larger fills, making this format practical for family-size packs, bulk products and foodservice portions.
  • Create a consistent brand presence: Front, back and side panels offer space for branding, product details and preparation instructions. Custom printing helps distinguish varieties across your range.
  • Match protection to your product: Material structures can be selected for moisture, oxygen and light barrier needs. For roasted coffee, an optional one-way degassing valve allows gas to escape while limiting outside air entry.
  • Manage storage and transport costs: Lightweight bags take up little space before filling compared with many rigid containers. Actual cost savings depend on bag size, materials, order volume and packing efficiency.
  • Support practical handling: Optional tin ties or compatible reclosure features help customers fold and secure the pack after opening, though they do not restore the original seal.

Suitable Products & Industries

Typical applications include whole-bean and ground coffee, loose-leaf tea, grains, dry ingredients, snacks, pet food and pet treats. Material selection should account for product weight, oils, aroma retention, filling conditions and shelf-life targets.

Choose the Right Structure

Side gusset bags are not the same as bottom-gusset stand-up pouches or flat bottom bags. Their ability to stand depends on the base construction and contents, an important consideration for shelf display.

Share your product, fill weight, display needs and filling method with Sorbar to develop a suitable bag specification.

How to Choose the Right Side Gusset Bag Size

The right size must hold your product and also leave room for sealing, display and everyday use. Products of the same weight can need very different pouch sizes, so we recommend confirming the size based on the following:

  • Product type and fill quantity: Share the product name and the net weight or volume per pack. Powders, granules, liquids and irregular pieces each need a different amount of space.
  • Filling and sealing method: Manual or automatic filling needs enough seal allowance, and fittings such as zippers or spouts also reduce usable capacity.
  • Sales and display: Consider shelf height, standing stability, carton packing and shipping.
  • Consumer use: Single-use or repeated use determines the opening size and whether a reclosable feature is needed.

Common Side Gusset Bag Reference Sizes

The fill quantities below are for initial selection only. A listed size will not hold every product of the same weight; the final size should be confirmed with a physical fill test.

Reference Fill WeightWidth × HeightSide Gusset
250 g80 × 260 mm50 mm
500 g85 × 360 mm60 mm
1000 g135 × 390 mm90 mm
2000 g170 × 495 mm110 mm

Reference sizes only. Custom sizes are available. Your dimension drawing should state how the gusset is measured (unfolded width or single-side fold depth) to avoid misunderstanding.

Not Sure Which Size to Choose?

Send Sorbar your product details, target fill quantity and filling method. We can recommend reference sizes and arrange samples for test filling, so you can check actual capacity, seal allowance and standing performance before confirming the production size.

If you have shelf-life requirements, please tell us as well, so we can evaluate the material structure and barrier needs. Shelf life cannot be guaranteed by pack size alone.

FAQ

Side Gusset Bags FAQ

What is the minimum order quantity for custom side gusset bags?
With digital printing, the MOQ is 1,000 pouches per design. With gravure printing, the MOQ is 10,000 pouches per design. Digital printing suits trial launches and multiple SKUs; gravure is more economical for large, repeat orders.
How long does production take?
Standard lead time is 10-12 working days for digital printing and 15-18 working days for gravure printing. Larger orders may require more time; the schedule confirmed with your order applies.
Can you help me choose the right size?
Yes. Tell us your product, target fill quantity and filling method. We will suggest reference sizes and can arrange samples for test filling before production.
Do you provide a free design template?
Yes. Tell us the pack type, size, quantity per design and number of designs, and we will send a free design template marking the bleed, safe area and seal positions, along with a recommended printing method.
Are side gusset bags good for roasted coffee?
Yes, they are commonly used for whole-bean and ground coffee. An optional one-way degassing valve lets gas escape while limiting outside air entry, and tin ties help customers fold and secure the bag after opening. Materials should account for oils, aroma retention and the shelf-life target.
Can side gusset bags stand on the shelf?
It depends on the base construction and the contents. Side gusset bags are not the same as bottom-gusset stand-up pouches or flat bottom bags, so tell us your display needs and we will recommend a suitable structure.
