What Are Stand-Up Pouches?

Stand-up pouches combine upright shelf presentation with flexible storage and transport. Their expandable bottom gusset lets the pouch stand on its own once filled, while the printable front and back panels give your brand space to stand out and communicate product benefits.

Why Choose Stand-Up Pouches?

  • Build shelf presence: Custom printing, finishes and pouch dimensions help create a recognizable brand presentation across product lines.
  • Protect your product: Select material structures for the moisture, oxygen and light barriers your contents need. Protection and shelf life depend on the chosen structure, sealing and storage conditions.
  • Improve convenience: Optional resealable zippers, tear notches and hanging holes support easy opening, repeat use and flexible retail display.
  • Manage packaging costs: Lightweight pouches can reduce storage space and freight weight compared with rigid containers. Digital printing supports smaller launches; gravure printing suits larger production runs.

Suitable Applications

Stand-up pouches are commonly used for snacks, coffee and tea, powders, pet food and treats, personal care products, and household goods, with materials and closures selected for each application.

How to Choose the Right Stand-Up Pouch Size

The right size must hold your product and also leave room for sealing, display and everyday use. Products of the same weight can need very different pouch sizes, so we recommend confirming the size based on the following:

  • Product type and fill quantity: Share the product name and the net weight or volume per pouch. Powders, granules, liquids and irregular pieces each need a different amount of space.
  • Filling and sealing method: Manual or automatic filling needs enough seal allowance, and fittings such as zippers or spouts also reduce usable capacity.
  • Sales and display: Consider shelf height, standing stability, carton packing and shipping.
  • Consumer use: Single-use or repeated use determines the opening size and whether a reclosable feature is needed.

Common Stand-Up Pouch Reference Sizes

The fill weights below are for initial selection only. A listed size will not hold every product of the same weight; the final size should be confirmed with a physical fill test.

Reference Fill WeightWidth × HeightBottom Gusset (Unfolded)
100 g120 × 200 mm80 mm
250 g160 × 230 mm90 mm
500 g190 × 265 mm100 mm
1000 g235 × 335 mm110 mm

Reference sizes only. Custom sizes are available. Your dimension drawing should state how the bottom gusset is measured (unfolded width or single-side fold depth) to avoid misunderstanding.

Not Sure Which Size to Choose?

Send Sorbar your product details, target fill quantity and filling method. We can recommend reference sizes and arrange samples for test filling, so you can check actual capacity, seal allowance and standing performance before confirming the production size.

If you have shelf-life requirements, please tell us as well, so we can evaluate the material structure and barrier needs. Shelf life cannot be guaranteed by pouch size alone.

FAQ

Stand-Up Pouches FAQ

What is the minimum order quantity for custom stand-up pouches?
With digital printing, the MOQ is 1,000 pouches per design. With gravure printing, the MOQ is 10,000 pouches per design. Digital printing is the practical choice for trial launches and multiple SKUs; gravure is more economical for large, repeat orders.
How long does production take?
Standard lead time is 10-12 working days for digital printing and 15-18 working days for gravure printing. Larger orders may require more time; the schedule confirmed with your order applies.
Should I choose digital or gravure printing?
If your design is final and each design runs in large quantities, gravure printing usually gives the lower unit cost. If you are testing a new product, changing artwork often or launching several designs at once, digital printing avoids printing cylinder costs. Digital printing does not automatically mean lower print quality; for strict brand colors we confirm color standards and proofs first.
Can you help me choose the right pouch size?
Yes. Tell us your product, target fill quantity and filling method. We will suggest reference sizes and can arrange samples for test filling, so you can check capacity, seal allowance and standing performance before production.
Are your stand-up pouches suitable for food contact?
Food-contact suitability and supporting documentation are confirmed for the selected materials and your destination market. Compliance review may cover FDA food-contact requirements, PPWR, PFAS restrictions, TPCH limits and relevant ASTM test methods, and third-party testing through SGS can be arranged on request.
Which closures and accessories can be added?
Options include regular zippers, easy-tear zippers, child-resistant zippers, tear notches, hang holes, rounded corners, clear windows, one-way degassing valves and tin ties. Accessories are not suitable for every pouch type or position, so the final configuration is confirmed against the material structure, production process and testing requirements.
Do you provide a free design template?
Yes. Tell us the pouch type, size, quantity per design and number of designs, and we will send a free design template that marks the bleed, safe area and seal positions, along with a recommended printing method.
What information do you need for a quotation?
Please share your product, fill weight or volume, target market, order quantity per design, number of designs and preferred dimensions. If you have shelf-life, color or accessory requirements, include them as well so we can recommend the right material structure.
