What Are Vacuum and Retort Bags?

Vacuum and retort bags serve different preservation needs. Vacuum bags allow air to be removed before sealing, helping limit oxidation and maintain product quality. Retort bags are designed for thermal processing after sealing, supporting shelf-stable foods when the product, packaging and sterilization process are properly validated.

Why Choose Vacuum or Retort Bags?

  • Match protection to your product: Vacuum packaging suits many chilled or frozen foods, while retort packaging supports ready-to-eat products processed for ambient storage. Barrier properties, puncture resistance and seal performance should match the contents and handling conditions.
  • Strengthen your brand presentation: Custom printing creates space for branding, serving suggestions and storage instructions. Clear vacuum bags can showcase the product; retort structures may be transparent or opaque, depending on protection requirements.
  • Create convenient product formats: Portion packs help brands serve retail, meal-preparation and foodservice markets. Retort pouches offer a lightweight format for ready-to-eat meals, while vacuum packs support compact storage and portion control.
  • Evaluate total packaging costs: Flexible bags can reduce packaging weight and storage space compared with many rigid containers. Savings depend on materials, filling and processing equipment, protective secondary packaging and production volume.

Typical Applications

Packaging Type Common Applications
Vacuum bags Meat, seafood, cheese, and selected chilled or frozen prepared foods
Retort bags Ready-to-eat meals, soups, sauces, beans, seafood and wet pet food

Specify the Process Before the Bag

Vacuum bags are not automatically retort-safe, and vacuum sealing alone does not make food shelf-stable. Food-contact suitability, processing limits, storage conditions and shelf life require confirmation.

Both formats can use different pouch constructions; they are not inherently stand-up bags. Sorbar can help develop the structure around your product and display needs.

Share your product, fill weight, packing equipment, processing conditions and target shelf life to discuss a suitable specification.

How to Choose the Right Vacuum or Retort Bag Size

The right size must hold your product and also leave room for sealing, display and everyday use. Products of the same weight can need very different pouch sizes, so we recommend confirming the size based on the following:

  • Product type and fill quantity: Share the product name and the net weight or volume per pack. Powders, granules, liquids and irregular pieces each need a different amount of space.
  • Filling and sealing method: Manual or automatic filling needs enough seal allowance, and fittings such as zippers or spouts also reduce usable capacity.
  • Sales and display: Consider how the pack is displayed (shelf, peg hook or carton), carton packing and shipping.
  • Consumer use: Single-use or repeated use determines the opening size and whether a reclosable feature is needed.

Not Sure Which Size to Choose?

Send Sorbar your product details, target fill quantity and filling method. We can recommend reference sizes and arrange samples for test filling, so you can check actual capacity, seal allowance and display performance before confirming the production size.

If you have shelf-life requirements, please tell us as well, so we can evaluate the material structure and barrier needs. Shelf life cannot be guaranteed by pack size alone.

FAQ

Vacuum & Retort Bags FAQ

What is the minimum order quantity for custom vacuum and retort bags?
With digital printing, the MOQ is 1,000 pouches per design. With gravure printing, the MOQ is 10,000 pouches per design. Digital printing suits trial launches and multiple SKUs; gravure is more economical for large, repeat orders.
How long does production take?
Standard lead time is 10-12 working days for digital printing and 15-18 working days for gravure printing. Larger orders may require more time; the schedule confirmed with your order applies.
Can you help me choose the right size?
Yes. Tell us your product, target fill quantity and filling method. We will suggest reference sizes and can arrange samples for test filling before production.
Do you provide a free design template?
Yes. Tell us the pack type, size, quantity per design and number of designs, and we will send a free design template marking the bleed, safe area and seal positions, along with a recommended printing method.
What is the difference between a vacuum bag and a retort bag?
A vacuum bag lets air be removed before sealing to limit oxidation, and suits many chilled or frozen foods. A retort bag is designed for thermal processing after sealing, supporting shelf-stable ready-to-eat foods when the product, packaging and sterilization process are properly validated.
Can a vacuum bag be used for retort processing?
Not automatically. Vacuum bags are not automatically retort-safe, and vacuum sealing alone does not make food shelf-stable. Tell us your processing conditions, packing equipment and target shelf life so we can specify a suitable structure.
