MOQ, Lead Time & Customization

Key InformationDetails
Minimum order quantity1,000 pcs. The MOQ may vary slightly with box style, size, material and printing process.
Sampling & lead timeSampling: 5-7 days. Standard production: 20-25 days. Both are evaluated against structural complexity, material supply and order quantity, and confirmed separately for samples and bulk production.
Size rangeAll sizes can be customized.
MaterialsPaper-wrapped greyboard, white cardboard, kraft paper and micro-flute corrugated board can be evaluated, depending on structure and use.
Certifications & complianceDocumentation such as FDA, FSC and PPWR is provided according to your target market and purchasing requirements. If your project requires FSC-certified materials, FSC labeling or food-contact compliance documents, raise this before quotation so it can be verified; not every gift box qualifies by default. For food gifts, confirm whether the box is in direct contact with the food.

Suitable Products & Industries

Common applications include cosmetics, skincare, jewelry, apparel accessories, confectionery, tea, specialty foods and corporate merchandise. Food products may require separate primary packaging; direct food-contact suitability must be confirmed.

Designed Around Your Product

Sorbar can help develop gift packaging around your product dimensions, weight, set arrangement, branding and budget. Box structure, board specification, inserts, printing and finishes should be selected together to balance appearance and function.

Share your product details, order quantity, preferred box style and delivery requirements to discuss a suitable gift box solution.

Why Choose Gift Box Packaging?

  • Make your product easier to recognize: Consistent brand colors, logo placement and material feel keep single items, sets and holiday editions on-brand, supporting retail display and brand recognition.
  • Give your product the right protection: The box and insert can be designed around the product’s shape and weight to reduce movement, impact and surface rubbing. Fragile or heavy products should have their support structure and transport protection further verified.
  • Improve the unboxing and gifting experience: Magnetic lids, drawers, ribbons and layered inserts make opening, removing and displaying the product easier, so consumers do not need to buy extra gift wrapping.
  • Simplify bundled sales and project delivery: Divided inserts combine several sizes or product categories into one set, suited to promotional gift sets, member gifts and corporate events.
  • Balance presentation with total cost: When choosing a box style, compare more than the unit price: consider shipping volume, storage space, packing efficiency and accessory assembly cost. Folding structures usually save empty-box shipping space, while pre-formed rigid boxes avoid on-site assembly.

A gift box is not a shipping carton. E-commerce or long-distance delivery projects usually also need an outer carton and cushioning.

How to choose: Start with the product weight, opening method and transport method, then match the box style. Windows, handles and inserts are functional options that can be combined where the structure allows.

How to Confirm Gift Box Size

Confirm the product and insert first, then define the inner dimensions of the box, and finally calculate the outer dimensions.

  1. Provide the actual product size and weight: Record length × width × height, including protruding parts such as caps, handles or outer bags. For multi-item sets, provide the data and orientation of each item.
  2. Define the product arrangement: State whether items lie flat, stand upright, sit in layers or side by side, and whether leaflets, greeting cards or samples are included.
  3. Allow space for the insert and handling: Insert thickness, cushioning needs and finger access all affect the space inside the box, so the product size should not be used directly as the inner box size.
  4. Distinguish inner and outer dimensions: Inner dimensions show whether the product fits; outer dimensions are used for display, carton loading and logistics volume. Board thickness and wrapping structure affect the difference between the two.
  5. Confirm fit with a structural sample: We recommend test-packing with the actual product to check removal, closing, movement and cartoning before confirming printing and mass production.

When requesting a quote, please state the dimension order, the unit, and whether the dimensions are inner or outer.

Printing Methods for Gift Boxes

The printing method depends on the paper, order quantity, design and structure. Rigid gift boxes are usually printed on the wrapping paper first, then finished and wrapped onto the board.

Printing Method Best For What to Check
Offset printing Images, gradients, detailed graphics and volume paper packaging CMYK, spot colors or a combination can be used; cost is calculated against quantity
Digital printing Samples, short runs, multiple versions and variable content Color, paper compatibility and post-press effects may differ from offset and should be confirmed in advance
Screen printing Partial patterns, text or decorative effects on specific materials Detail and efficiency depend on the material and pattern; suitability needs evaluation
Flexo printing Some corrugated packaging and matching shipping packaging Whether it meets gift box appearance requirements depends on the paper surface and graphic detail

Gold and silver hot stamping, debossing and embossing are decorative or post-press processes, not the same as standard color printing.

Color Management for Gift Box Printing

Color is judged against a standard agreed by both parties, not against screen display alone.

  • Confirm the color reference: Provide Pantone numbers, brand color guidelines or physical color samples; when using Pantone, state the guide series and suffix.
  • Evaluate paper and surface effects: Paper shade, ink absorption, lamination and varnish can affect the final color, especially on uncoated, dark and specialty papers.
  • Choose a suitable proofing method: Digital proofs can check content and color direction; for strict brand colors, confirm whether a sample on the specified paper and closer to the production process is needed.
  • Measure and compare during production: Instrument measurement is combined with visual checks under an agreed light source, focusing on brand colors, large background areas and color harmony between box parts.
  • Confirm finished and repeat-order standards: The approved sample after surface finishing serves as the reference; repeat orders can be compared against retained samples.

If acceptance is based on color difference (ΔE), agree on the calculation method, measurement conditions and tolerance in advance. Zero color difference cannot be promised across different papers or processes.

Finished Gift Box Testing

Tests should match the product weight, box style and delivery method; not every gift box uses the same test set.

Test What Is Checked
Appearance and dimensions Size, squareness, warping, wrapping smoothness, stains, scratches and graphic position
Printing and color Color deviation, registration, text sharpness and visual consistency between parts
Rub resistance and adhesion Whether printed, laminated, varnished or stamped areas fade, peel or flake
Bonding and structure Whether wrapping paper, corners and glued areas are secure, without opening or delamination
Opening and closing Lid fit, drawer sliding, magnetic closure and folding assembly
Insert fit Product positioning, support, ease of removal and any risk of scratching at contact points
Load and accessories Where needed, the load performance of handles, ribbons, joints and the box base
Transport simulation As required by the project, drop, vibration or stacking evaluation of the complete shipping pack with the product or an equivalent load

Specific test methods, sample sizes and acceptance criteria must be confirmed in advance. Checking the gift box alone cannot replace validation of the complete shipping pack.

Surface Finishes for Gift Boxes

  • Gloss lamination: Enhances shine and graphic contrast; suits colorful designs.
  • Matte lamination: Reduces surface glare; suits minimalist or low-gloss brand visuals.
  • Soft-touch lamination: Gives a soft feel; scratch resistance, fingerprints and color shift should be confirmed with samples.
  • Varnish: Applied overall or in selected areas to adjust gloss and surface appearance.
  • Spot UV: Highlights logos, text or patterns with local gloss contrast.
  • Gold and silver hot stamping: Creates a metallic or decorative foil effect for logos, lines and key information.
  • Embossing and debossing: Raised or recessed relief adds tactile and visual depth; evaluated against the paper and pattern.
  • Specialty and textured papers: Use the paper’s own texture, color or pearlescent effect to express the design; printing and bonding compatibility must be confirmed.

If recyclable design matters to your project, evaluate the combination and separability of paper, lamination, magnets, foam and other non-paper components first. A package should not be considered recyclable just because the box is made of paper.

Inserts, Closures and Accessories

Solve holding, removal, closing and carrying needs first, then add decoration.

Need Options to Evaluate Selection Focus
Hold and protect the product Paperboard, molded pulp, corrugated, foam or thermoformed inserts Product weight, fragile areas, contact materials and recycling requirements
Easy opening and closing Magnets, tuck closures, ribbons, pull tabs or finger notches Opening feel, holding reliability and assembly cost
Carrying Paper rope, cotton rope, webbing or structural handles Total load, attachment position and local reinforcement
Product display Die-cut windows, clear window film or display inserts Visible area, structural strength and dust protection
Organizing multi-item sets Dividers, layered trays, leaflet slots and card holders Packing sequence, number of parts and ease of removal
Adding brand information Greeting cards, belly bands, hang tags, stickers or QR codes Readability, scanning performance and assembly efficiency
First-opening indication Tear strips or tamper-evident labels Compatibility with the paper surface, lamination and opening method

Where children, small magnets, direct food contact or special cleanliness requirements are involved, the safety and suitability of accessories must be confirmed separately.

Gift Box Artwork Requirements

Use the Design Template for Your Box Style

Lay out your artwork on the final, confirmed structural template. For rigid boxes, distinguish the wrapping paper, lining, wrap-around edges and glue areas; for folding cartons, distinguish cut lines, crease lines and glue flaps. Please do not scale the template yourself.

File Format and Image Resolution

  • Provide AI or print-ready PDF files first.
  • PSD can be used as an image source file, but it is not a vector format.
  • Calculate raster image resolution at the actual print size; at least 300 ppi is recommended.
  • Embed linked images or package them with the file.

Text and Process Layers

  • Convert text in the print file to outlines and keep an editable source file.
  • Manage die lines, dimension marks and printed graphics on separate layers.
  • Mark hot stamping, spot UV, embossing, debossing and white ink separately; do not merge them into images.

Bleed and Safe Area

  • Bleed for standard trim edges is usually 3 mm; the template is final.
  • Wrap-around and gluing allowances on rigid boxes cannot be replaced by standard bleed.
  • Keep text, logos and barcodes away from cut lines, folds, wrapped edges and glue areas; the safe distance follows the structural template.

Color and Special Effects

  • Use CMYK for four-color printing; mark spot colors with Pantone numbers.
  • Printing on dark or metallic papers needs a separate evaluation of white ink or another base layer.
  • Confirm small text, fine lines, large dark areas and graphics that cross fold lines before printing.

Barcodes, QR Codes and Final Approval

Barcodes and QR codes need their quiet zones and should avoid corners, seams and highly reflective finishes. Before mass production, please check text, dimensions, graphic orientation, colors, finishes and scanning performance.

FAQ

Gift Boxes FAQ

What is the minimum order quantity for custom gift boxes?
The MOQ is 1,000 pcs. It may vary slightly with box style, size, material and printing process.
How long do sampling and production take?
Sampling takes 5-7 days and standard production takes 20-25 days. Both are evaluated against structural complexity, material supply and order quantity, and are confirmed separately for samples and bulk production.
Which gift box style should I choose?
Start with the product weight, opening method and transport method, then match the box style: lid-and-base, book-style, drawer, shoulder, collapsible rigid, folding carton or specialty-shaped. Windows, handles and inserts can be combined where the structure allows.
Should I give you inner or outer dimensions?
Give us the actual product size and weight first. Inner dimensions show whether the product and insert fit; outer dimensions are used for display, carton loading and logistics. When requesting a quote, state the dimension order, the unit and whether the dimensions are inner or outer.
Can you provide FSC, FDA or PPWR documentation?
Documentation such as FDA, FSC and PPWR is provided according to your target market and purchasing requirements. Raise FSC-certified materials, FSC labeling or food-contact compliance needs before quotation so they can be verified; not every gift box qualifies by default.
Are paper gift boxes always recyclable?
Not automatically. Lamination, magnets, foam and other non-paper components affect recyclability, so their combination and separability should be evaluated first. A package should not be considered recyclable just because the box is made of paper.
